Program Characteristics
The focus of the BCC Training Academy (Pre-Apprentice Program) design is intended for
disadvantaged as well as underserved females and minorities located in Lake County Illinois,
which range in age from 18-32 to be trained in reading, mathematics, career development, job
readiness skills, and on-the-job training.  This preparatory training program will assist
minorities in preparing for the entrance level exam for apprentice programs in the field of Blue
Print Reading, Carpentry, Electrical, Flooring, HVAC, Masonry, Painting and Plumbing.

Program Overview
The BCC Training Academy (Pre-Apprenticeship) is based on a traditional open enrollment
model.  To enter into the training program perspective students are required to complete an
application for the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, have a valid high school diploma or GED, take
an assessment test for aptitude and mathematics, and pass a drug screening.
Once the individual is assessed and scored he/she is placed on a specific track of learning
which is reflective of the initial assessment.  There are a total of three tracks (Basic,
Intermediate, and Advanced), which are divided into three modules.

Module One consists of classroom training.  In this module instructors will equip students with
the skills they need to succeed in reading, math, and job skills development.

Module Two consists of on-the-job training.  In this module a continuation of classroom training
will be combined with intern companies in the eight overarching fields to begin to teach
students on best practice methods and about the specifics of their chosen field of interest.

Module Three consists of additional on-the-job training, and test preparation.  In the final
module of learning, instructors will provide an overview of the union test and proctor a final
exam for preparation to sit for the union test.  In addition, intern companies will assess the
training orchestrated within the breakout sessions, and hone in on the skill training that is
needed for successful entry into the union.
